4th of July Pool Party

7 Tips for an Epic 4th of July Pool Party

Declared a U.S. holiday in 1941, succeeding the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the 4th of July (aka Independence Day or July 4th) has been celebrated with stunning fireworks displays and family friendly festivities. According to the National Retail Federation, eighty-six percent of Americans plan to celebrate the Fourth of July this year. Popular activities include cookouts, barbeques, and picnics (61%). Another 40% will attend community fireworks displays and celebrations.

This year, Independence Day falls on a Thursday, with 105˚F weather in the forecast. That makes throwing an epic 4th of July Pool Party an excellent idea. Also, since most firework shows in the valley don’t start until 9pm, you may be able to still attend a community event. Chandler, Fountain Hills, Gilbert, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe all have scheduled events happening on the Fourth of July.

Check out these 7 tips for making your 4th of July pool party epic.

Send Invites to Friends & Family

There is a little more than a week left until the Fourth, so your best bet for inviting friends and family is to create, send and manage online invitations. There are several websites that provide this service for free. Alternatively, you can create an event on Facebook, which takes less than a minute. Facebook also tallies up responses to your invitation and, if enabled, sends you an instant notification.

Patriotic Themed Decorations

Purchase spray chalk and, after cutting templates in carboard, “paint” lawn stars on your grass. Paint three or more 16-ounce Mason jars red, white, and blue for plastic utensils. Cut inexpensive pool noodles into three pieces, tie together with ribbon, and insert patriotic streamers in the top. Hang banners, drape cloths on tables, and blow up some balloons. These and more decoration ideas can be found on Pinterest.

Lots of Fruit Infused Water

Nothing says summertime refreshment quite like in-season fruits (e.g., cherries, blueberries, peaches, raspberries, and watermelon). And what better way to enjoy those fruits than to immerse them into either bottled or sparkling water. The latter naturally bubbles making it a good choice for your July 4th festivities. Offering fruit infused water will help keep everyone hydrated – especially important when it’s 105˚F out.

Swimming Essentials

It’s a good idea to have a sunscreen station, positioned near the pool, so your guests don’t forget to apply. Experts recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen offering protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Post signs reminding people to reapply every two hours. You may also want to consider having some extra towels handy, as this will help prevent water from being tracked into your home.

Pool Games

No 4th of July pool party would be complete without games and inflatables. Inflatable pool floats, noodles, and beach balls can be found online and in stores. Games like Marco Polo or Sharks and Minnows are fun for all ages. Cannonball splash contests, inflatable races, and diving ring tosses will fire up your guests’ friendly competitive streaks. You can also throw some balloons into the water, but make sure to skim the water at the end of the party.

Music

It’s not a 4th of July pool party until there’s music. Unsure which patriotic songs to include in this year’s playlist? Spotify has a top 140 Fourth of July playlist that you can easily add to your own account. Included in their list is:

  • “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
  • “Born in the U.S.A” by Bruce Springsteen
  • “Party in the U.S.A” by Miley Cyrus
  • “California Girls” by The Beach Boys

Food

Celebrate the Fourth will all-American classics including hot dogs, burgers, barbeque chicken, grilled corn, potato salad, and fruit salad. For dessert, you can offer cheery pie; cheesecake strawberries; red, white, and blue cupcakes; fruit skewers; or firecracker ice pops. Set everything up buffet style with trashcans readily available for disposable plates, utensils, and napkins so that clean up is a breeze.
