Create Your Own Dive-In Theater!

Create Your Own Dive-In Theater!

With the craziness and continuous upgrades of online streaming services over the past few years, going to the movie theater has become a rare event.

It’s almost nostalgic now to gather around with a bowl of popcorn, and your favorite candy and sit anxiously through fifteen minutes of commercials before the movie begins. With your personal backyard pool along with the summer heat, create a dive-in theater for yourself, family, and friends – combining the love of movies with swimming or floating! Dive-in theaters are best enjoyed after the sun has already set. You can still do this fun activity in the colder seasons, instead just utilize your built-in spa or above-ground hot tub!

Here’s a quick list of what you need for your own dive-in theater:

DIY Movie Screen:

Use a wall outside with a large white sheet – your very own screen! Make sure to secure the edges of the sheet to the wall in order to ensure it doesn’t fly away in the wind or flap around during the movie. Alternatively, you can build your own portable screen.

Set the Projector

Gather a projector, laptop, or Blu-ray player – some projectors come with an HDMI-enabled device to make it easier for playing videos from a smartphone or tablet to the projector. There are many options with projectors, choose the best one for your needs.

The projector needs to be set up high enough in order to not obstruct your guests’ view or accidentally cast shadows onto the screen from being set too low. It should also be a safe distance from the water to ensure everyone is having fun and a safe experience. A Bluetooth sound bar is a great option to consider for speakers to remove additional wires.

Concession Stand

Lay out everyone’s favorite movie snacks on a table with an assortment of treats; buttered popcorn, refreshing beverages, nachos, hot dogs, soft pretzels, etc. Add a little extra comfort by setting aside an array of pool noodles and inflatables for some pool floating during the movie.

Select a Film

Can’t decide what movie to watch? Here are some water theme movie ideas:

  • Finding Nemo (2003)
  • Finding Dory (2016)
