Getting your Pool Ready for Spring

Spring is just around the corner, so it’s time to make sure that your inground pool is ready for all the fun in the sun you’re prepared to have. What all do you need to do to make sure that oasis is available for you to dive right in? Platinum Pools has previously talked about some maintenance steps to take, so let’s discuss a few more.

Skimming and Cleaning Baskets

Even during the off-season, make sure to skim your pool’s surface, so that debris doesn’t eventually sink and become more difficult to remove. Skimming increases how efficient your circulation system works and helps to decrease how much chlorine you need to add to your pool.

Once a week, ensure that you empty the strainer baskets to increase your pool’s efficiency further and decrease chlorine demands. In inground pools, you can find these baskets in your deck. Remove the plastic bucket and shake out any debris it has collected.

Make sure that you are checking and maintaining the water level in your pool when you are skimming and cleaning out the baskets. If the water falls below the skimmer baskets, it can damage your pump and necessitate repair.

Vacuum your Pool

Vacuuming your pool every week will keep your water clear and reduce how much chemicals you must use. If you have a manual pool vacuum, use it like you would your standard vacuum, and for best results, overlap each stroke.

Along with vacuuming, brush the walls and tile of your pool once a week. This type of maintenance will help reduce algae buildup and calcium deposits. Algae and calcium can lead to more significant issues if they’re allowed to build up, so stay on top of this maintenance.

Clean your Pool Filter

The type of pool filter in your system will determine the procedures you’ll need to take to clean that filter, but they all require periodic cleaning. The best time to clean your filter is when there is an increase in flow between the pressure gauge and flow meter.

You’re looking for a difference between 10 to 15 pounds per square inch. However, be aware that cleaning your filter more than is recommended can hinder the filtration process. A small amount of dirt on your filter helps trap other particles, which removes debris from the water.
